Over the Mountains to Gougane Barra

The Kealkill to Gougane Barra way-marked trail follows a scenic route over the mountains, through lakes and down into historic Gougane Barra. We recently walked the most picturesque part of this trail starting at Coomacroombeg (north of Kealkill).

After crossing the bridge, follow the track up the mountain past the Scottish Highland cattle. From here, the route climbs up through Lackavane and eventually levels out as the trail meanders between two lakes – Lough Fada (left) and Lough Namrat.

The route here turns East and follows the ridge looking down into the scenic Gougane Barra Valley below. As the trail continues, views open up into the deep valley of the Gougane Barra Forrest Park. The path eventually makes is way down to St. Finbar’s Oratory and then to the Gougane Barra Hotel where you can enjoy a drink and a meal.

This walk is one of nine walks being guided by Wanderlust Glengarriff this August for the annual Bóthar Fundraising Walk.

September 2-4 Walking Break

Wanderlust Glengarriff will guide a 3-day tour of the beautiful Glengarriff area from September 2-4. Day one will include walking the woods of the Glengarriff Nature Reserve. Day two we will explore the scenic Coomhola Valley. Day three will conclude with climbing the peak of Sugarloaf Mountain. Nordic Walking Classes are optional and price-included.

Cost: € 159 for 3 walks & 2 nights in Glengarriff.

Nordic Walking Tour: August 19-21

Wanderlust will lead a nordic walking tour in Glengarriff, August 19-21. Nordic walking is a fun, total body workout that benefits both body and mind. Learn the technique to benefit best from healthy pole walking. The courses are suitable for beginners.

The tour will begin Friday afternoon with a 1-2 hour walk. This will include some nordic walking training. Saturday and Sunday morning we will walk 2-3 hours. Courses include nordic walking poles and cost €60.00. Book now to secure your place.

Please bring:

-A bottle of water to drink after practising.

-A towel and/or fresh clothes to change into.

-Shoes: runners are fine, as well as low shoes not covering the ankle, with a good grip; if possible, no hiking boots;

-Raingear, hat, cap.

Together with Markus Bäuchle Derek will regularly guide Wanderlust walkers and hill walkers around Glengarriff, Bantry Bay and West Cork. Eliane Zimmermann offers her knowledge and expertise to garden visitors and horticulturists who are keen to learn more about world famous Garinish Island and other reknown gardens in West Cork.
